Sustainability at the VELUX Group

Our contribution to a more sustainable building sector

VELUX roof windows are designed to transform living spaces by harnessing daylight and enhancing indoor air quality, promoting well-being and supporting healthier indoor environments. Since our founding in 1941, the VELUX Group has remained committed to delivering products that are both functional and beneficial to society, while continuing to drive innovation across our product portfolio.

Today, as buildings account for nearly 40% of Europe’s energy consumption, improving indoor climates with innovative building solutions is more critical than ever. At the VELUX Group, we aim to create healthier places to live and work while taking steps to minimise our impact on both people and planet.

The first and only roof window company in the world rated platinum by EcoVadis

At the VELUX Group, we are proud to be the only roof window company in the top 1% of organisations ranked globally by EcoVadis. The platinum sustainability rating reflects our commitment to integrating more sustainable practices throughout our organisation.

Embedding sustainability into our ways of working

At the VELUX Group, we consider the well-being of people and the planet to be inseparable, interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Ultimately, we strive to design, produce and deliver solutions that nurture both, creating positive impact today and for generations to come.

Our Model Company Objective guides us in our efforts to embed sustainability throughout our company and value chain – from sourcing and product design, to production, distribution, installation and product end-of-life responsibility.

For each of the main activities of our business, we are working to better understand, evaluate and minimise any negative environmental or social impacts. This helps us to ensure that our products are differentiated across the value chain, from sourcing of raw materials to their end of life.

Our decarbonisation commitments

We take our impacts seriously and are committed to reducing emissions from our own operations and across our value chain.

At the VELUX Group, we know climate action will ultimately be measured by results. Which is why we are proud to have reduced our Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by almost two-thirds since 2020.

Product sustainability

Reducing carbon emissions is an essential part of our strategy, but our sustainability commitment extends much further. We take a holistic approach that considers the entire lifecycle of our products.

VELUX solutions deliver a wide range of benefits, enhancing people’s well-being while improving the performance of buildings. Our People and Planet framework illustrates this interconnected impact and provides a visual representation for how we work with our products and aim to create value for people while reducing impacts on the planet.

Our partnership with WWF

We are committed to reducing and removing 4.5 million tonnes of CO2, reflecting the scale of our estimated historical carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) since our company’s founding in 1941 and up until 2041 – our 100th anniversary. To help us deliver on this commitment, in 2020 we entered a 20-year partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The partnership aims to contribute the verified* carbon units generated by the forest projects to the host countries' climate commitments. This means that the verified carbon units will be retired and will not be traded nor used for offsetting by the VELUX Group or any other organisation.

*The partnership will be assessing the forest carbon projects though independent third parties according to internationally recognised standards, preferably Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) where possible and appropriate.
